The Ethiopian Electric Utility (EEU), in collaboration with the Industrial Parks Development Corporation (IPDC), has inaugurated and launched an Electric Vehicle (EV) Charging Station that will contribute to advancing Ethiopia’s green economy and support the realization of the Digital Ethiopia 2030 strategy.

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, Ethiopian Electric Utility Chief Executive Officer, Engineer Getu Geremew, stated that the utility is implementing numerous modern initiatives aimed at enhancing operational efficiency and improving customer satisfaction. He noted that EEU is also playing a historic role in supporting the country's green economic development and efforts to combat climate change.

He further explained that, in addition to the EV charging stations launched in March of this fiscal year in Kotebe, Lebu, and Piassa areas of Addis Ababa, the utility has now completed and officially inaugurated a highly advanced and ultra-fast charging station developed in partnership with IPDC. The station has the capacity to serve up to 24 vehicles simultaneously.

The CEO emphasized that the initiative is not limited to Addis Ababa. He announced that EV charging stations currently under construction in Bishoftu, Mojo, Batu, Adama, Shashemene, and Hawassa will be fully completed and ready for service in the coming months.

On his part, Ethiopian Industrial Parks Development Corporation Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Fisseha Yitagesu, stated that the newly inaugurated EV charging station represents a significant milestone in the country's manufacturing journey.

Noting the growing number of electric vehicles in Ethiopia, Dr. Fisseha expressed appreciation to the Ethiopian Electric Utility for undertaking such a forward-looking project.

He also highlighted that IPDC’s flagship concept, the “Eco-Industrial Park,” has a strong connection and synergy with the EV charging station initiative. He stressed that the partnership between the two institutions is highly important for achieving shared development goals.

State Minister of Transport and Logistics, H.E. Bereo Hassan, also addressed the gathering and emphasized that the collaboration between IPDC and EEU is crucial for shaping Ethiopia’s future development trajectory.

The State Minister noted that the EV charging station project provides a strong foundation for the transportation sector. He added that expanding such charging infrastructure demonstrates Ethiopia’s strong commitment to green development and sustainable transportation.

Furthermore, he stressed that investing in this sector is essential for mitigating climate change and sustaining the country’s Green Legacy initiatives. He assured participants that the Ministry of Transport and Logistics will provide full support to this promising and impactful endeavor.

Currently, the number of electric vehicles imported into Ethiopia has reached approximately 140,000. As part of the first phase of its EV infrastructure expansion plan, EEU is working to establish a total of 40 charging stations—32 in Addis Ababa and 8 in other cities across the country.

Alongside the inauguration of the EV charging station, a tree-planting program was also conducted within the premises of the Industrial Parks Development Corporation as part of ongoing environmental sustainability efforts.

#EthiopianElectricUtility
